This application is tailored for the reading of Sentinel smartcards within the framework of Network Rail’s Sentinel system. It facilitates both personal verification and authorized checks by allowing users to authenticate their own smartcards as well as conduct inspections for team members and assess Track Visitor Permits (TVPs).

The functionality for checking Sentinel cards is straightforward; users can scan the QR code located on the front of the card or TVP, or use NFC technology if enabled on their device. To utilize NFC for reading a Sentinel card, users should maintain contact with the rear of their device until a successful reading occurs.

This app is compatible with any Android smartphone or tablet running Android 4.0 or higher, provided it has a rear-facing autofocus camera and NFC capabilities. The secure reading of Sentinel smartcards is accomplished via NFC, which accesses information from the smartcard's microchip electronically. Notably, an internet connection is not mandatory for this process; NFC functionality allows for card reading without any internet availability. However, if an internet connection is available during the read process, updates from the Sentinel database can be automatically transferred to the smartcard.

All activities related to smartcard verification are automatically uploaded to the database whenever internet connectivity is available, or they can be queued for later uploading by relaunching the app once connectivity is restored.

Prior to using NFC, users should ensure that it is enabled in their device settings.

The operation of the application is user-friendly and can be summarized in the following steps:

1. Open the app.
2. If using NFC, place the Sentinel smartcard against the back of your device, or select the QR code button and focus on the card’s QR code.
3. Confirm the sponsor for the current day.
4. Based on the card presented, either the card details will be displayed or a menu of options will appear for authorized card checkers.
